Interview Guidelines

Community Art Advocate/Educator Interview

Directions:

Conduct an interview with a community arts advocate and/or educator not employed with a school system. This could be a museum educator, a leader of a local arts organization, or an art educator employed outside of the school environment. This does not have to be a local person. There are many ways to conduct an interview. This could be in person, over the phone, through Skype, or an online chat. It does need to be real time instead of through email. This interview should be at least 15 minutes in length and as long as you are interested in speaking to the person.

Purpose:

1. To find out information about how arts education is used outside of the schools.

2. To find out methods of/or information about arts advocacy.

3. To gain insight about what other professionals are doing in the field of art in regards to advocacy and education.

4. To make a reciprocal networking connection with another arts educator and/or advocate that can be beneficial to you, your school, or the promotion of arts in the community.

Important Interview Information

Carefully consider who you select to interview so that they clearly fit the role of art educator (outside of a school system) or art advocate. Just because someone makes art, sells art, or talks about art, does not make them an advocate or an educator.

Consider interviewing someone that you do not know. These can be the most engaging and beneficial interviews.

  • Remember you can interview someone out of town.
  • Represent yourself, and this institution well.
  • Call ahead to introduce yourself
  • Tell them the purpose of the call
  • Request a time that is convenient for them, letting them know that the interview will take approximately 15-30 minutes
  • Be prompt, for the scheduled interview
  • Be professional and courteous
  • Thank the person for the interview opportunity
